The Toyota Aqua subcompact hatchback for the domestic Japanese market entered its second generation in 2021. The model is very popular in Japan. The first generation, we recall, lasted on the assembly line for almost ten years and underwent two restylings (in 2014 and 2017). The left-hand drive modification of this car is known in some countries as the Prius C. The Aqua II is based on a slightly stretched version of the TNGA GA-B modular platform with a wheelbase of 2600 mm. Compared to the predecessor model, the length and width remained the same, the height increased by 30 mm, and the wheelbase by 50 mm. Like the first model, the new Aqua is equipped only with a parallel hybrid installation, the maximum output of which reaches 116 hp.

The body of the new Aqua was created from scratch, it is distinguished by calm, harmonious solutions with smooth shaping of the body panels. The design of the front part with a large air intake mouth echoes other subcompact and compact Toyotas of the latest wave and resembles, for example, the new Yaris. The rear lights are quite spectacular and original in shape, and the bumper is decorated with a black insert, giving a more dynamic look. The interior is simple in decoration, like many Japanese cars of this class, but it looks modern. Instead of a transmission lever on the floor, a joystick on the front panel is now used, and the parking brake is foot-operated. The maximum configuration has a 10.5-inch display, the rest - a 7-inch. Aqua will offer options such as a projection display, an electrically adjustable driver's seat. For the 2023 model year, the manufacturer offers the GR Sport option - for those who want to see a sportier car. This version has underfloor struts, a Power+ driving mode, and a special hexagonal mesh grille, exclusive 17-inch wheels with 205/45 R17 Bridgestone Potenza tires. Inside, you can see seats with the GR logo and additional lateral support, aluminum pedals, and a three-spoke steering wheel.

The 2022 Toyota Aqua hybrid system includes a 1.5-liter M15A-FXE gasoline engine (91 hp), a 1HM electric motor with a capacity of 59 kW (80 hp), and an innovative bipolar nickel-metal hydride battery with a capacity of 5.0 Ah (only the basic B configuration uses a 4.3 Ah lithium-ion battery). The E-Four system is offered as an option - with it, the rear axle is driven by a separate 1NN electric motor with an output of 4.7 kW (in the B configuration - 3.9 kW), which turns on during bad weather conditions and helps to start on a slippery surface. The new Aqua is 20% more economical than its predecessor. With a fuel tank capacity of 36 liters, the hatchback has a fairly decent power reserve, considering that fuel consumption in the combined cycle is about 2.8-3.3 l / 100 km. The new Aqua has a single-pedal driving mode - like in the Nissan Leaf. It allows you to control acceleration and deceleration only with the accelerator. When you release the pedal, intensive deceleration occurs - and due to this, energy is regenerated. This mode works when driving on pure electric traction, without using the internal combustion engine. After the change of generations, the length, width and height of the Aqua are 4050, 1695 and 1485 mm, respectively. The design features of the suspensions have been retained: MacPherson struts at the front and a twisted torsion beam at the rear for front-wheel drive cars. The same layout has been retained in the sports GR Sport, but here Gazoo Racing engineers have thoroughly conjured up the chassis. All-wheel drive versions with the E-Four system use an independent rear suspension (double wishbones) on a subframe. The Aqua hatchback has a roomy luggage compartment with a depth of 656 mm (with the rear seats in the standard position). The internal width of the trunk is 1153 mm, the height is 824 mm.

The basic configuration for the Japanese market includes a set of preventive safety systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane control, prevention of confusion of the gas and brake pedals in parking lots, and blind spot monitoring. Electronics help prevent collisions on turns by recognizing oncoming vehicles and pedestrians crossing the road in advance. Depending on the configuration, the car also gets an automatic parking system, which automatically controls steering, gear shifting and brakes, and is also equipped with a parking position memory function.

The second generation can be considered an improved version in all respects. The car has become more convenient, more technologically advanced, safer and more economical.
