•Transmission:Manual

•Fuel Type:Petrol

Vehicle Story:

The third-generation, 40-series Land Cruiser was launched in 1960 and remained in production for an astonishing 51 years. Resolutely utilitarian in nature, even the official Toyota UK website says that: “The simple pressed-steel body panels were essentially there to stop the outside coming in”, which is wonderfully refreshing.

Originally offered only with the F-series petrol engines, a diesel engine joined the range in 1972. However, in line with its role as a working tool rather than an excuse for marketeers to have a long liquid lunch, the 40-series had a choice of three final drive ratios, depending on the intended use: ‘full’, ‘economy’ or ‘moderate’ being available, along with a low-ratio transfer gearbox that gave a total of six forward gears.

Four different wheelbases were also on offer, along with a variety of different body styles. First officially sold in the UK in 1975, Toyota had shifted a total of a million worldwide by 1980.

Like the automotive equivalent of a Great Train Robber, the Land Cruiser died in Brazil in late 2001.

•Exterior

The vehicle's restoration is evident in its remarkably straight panels and well-fitted doors. The new window rubbers hold the green Sundym glass securely. Lamp lenses and round foglamps above the front bumper are in good condition, and the badges and rear Toyota mudflaps appear new.

The front bumper is straight, featuring a 12-volt electric winch and recovery points, while the rear has a robust towing point. Grey-painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and matching 285/75R16 Toyo Open Country A/T tires, including the spare, reflect a caring owner.

However, the tires are aging and need replacement soon. There's light corrosion on the window frames, bubbling on the nearside rear wing, and UV damage to the wing-mounted front lamp lenses.

•Interior

The cabin is charmingly simple and well-finished for a 44-year-old vehicle. There are no cupholders, leather trim, walnut veneer, airbags, carpets, or a fourth gear.

Instead, it offers seating for seven, durable mechanical levers, and an analogue Autometer quartz clock. Despite its simplicity, it includes power steering, an Unicla air-conditioning system, and a CD player.

The driver's seat is a single, with a small front bench for two more. The inward-facing rear bench seats fold away for versatile passenger and cargo space. The newly painted floor is protected by a mat, and the headlining and door cards, which have speakers for the JVC headunit, are in very good condition.

The front and rear seats are trimmed in different materials, which may not suit everyone.
