📜 DID YOU KNOW?
The first type of boat (small sailing or motor boat) built by the Greeks was the legendary “Trehantiri” a par excellence Hydra boat, which is distinguished for its stability and was suitable for the transport of goods & the service of ferry lines. Trehantiri is the most common type of boat in the Aegean sea and in the past decades, it has been used mainly as a fishing boat. Its main feature is the curved anterior position of the arc, which sometimes approaches the quadrant of the circle. Its name comes from the Greek words "trohanthra" & "treho", which refer to Byzantine texts from the 10th century, and mean "strict position" & "run", i.e. in free translation "it runs straight". Formerly, as a fishing boat it was single-mast or two-mast & usually, it had a mast with a triangular sail (lateen or sakomeva) and later two masts with two spankers (front sails located on the rear side of the ship's mast, especially the mizzenmast) and was called «Lovero». Nowadays, the "Trehantiri" is powered by diesel engines, while the mast that still exists in some, has a rather decorative role. However, a Trehantiri with a small Latin can be moved & without an engine. Today, most ship of that type has a length of 6 – 15 meters long and their capacity reaches 40-50 tons. Being a sailboat, the "trehantiri" had a capacity of 250 tons. Due to the difficulty of its construction, it was built & is still made by special ship carpenters.
