Dwarf Zagara Bianca Lemon Tree, grafted on Flying Dragon, for Tiny Gardens

The plant is 110cm tall, including pot. It is a rare high quality and productive lemon variety to find especially in dwarf form, grafted on Flying Dragon rootstock.

Femminello Zagara Bianca Lemon (Citrus Limon) is one of the most traditional, high quality lemon variety. Probably a vegetative mutation of the Femminello Comune variety, known since ancient times and still widely grown in Sicily today. This particularly productive cultivar differs from the others in both the colour of its flowers, which are white, and its young shoots, which are an attractive pale green, like those of the orange, rather than the typical purplish colour.

The tree is fairly vigorous, with elliptic leaves with a slightly rounded tip, and sometimes thorns on the branches. The medium-sized fruit is elliptic with a rounded base and thick, pale yellow rind. The leaves tend to drop if the temperature falls close to freezing point.

When we make this beautiful union with the two citrus we have created a citrus tree that will be dwarf in its growth habit.

The Flying Dragon restricts the overall size of the tree, however it does not reduce the size of the fruit or the bounty of the crop. This powerful rootstock just suppresses the size of the tree. Generally a citrus tree will grow somewhere between 3 - 5 metres and about 3 - 4 metres wide. When it has been grafted onto Flying Dragon it will grow to around 1.5 - 2m high and wide.

Flying Dragon originates from Japan where it has been grown for centuries. It was introduced to the USA in the early 1900’s and then introduced to Australia.

Horticulturally, it is a challenging rootstock to graft too, it takes considerable skill, patience and experience to master the technique. It is a super impressive under stock that has changed the citrus retail sector markedly. As gardens shrink in size and courtyards and balconies are more common, Dwarf growing citrus is a perfect solution for container plantings and small garden spaces.

ORIGIN

It seems to originate from southern Italy, especially Sicily, where it's actually grown a lot.

PLANT

-Tree features: plant is medium in vigour, classic in growth.

- Leaves: Leaves are lanceolate in shape, dark-green in colour, medium in size.

FRUIT

- Shape: Fruit is slightly round shape, a little bit bigger than a classic lemon in size. Skin is also thicker!

- Flavour: Skin is so aromatic, and thick! Pulp is refreshing in taste, juicy and a little bit seedy.

- Colour: bright yellow outside, light yellow inside.

SEASON OF RIPENESS

Season of ripeness: Zagara Bianca Femminello Lemon is somewhat 4 season in flowering. So it basically produces fruits almost every season.

It usually starts to bloom during Spring time, then it can continue during Summer and Autumn also.

HOW TO USE IT

- In the Kitchen: Fruit can be highly used in the kitchen!

The amazing skin can be used to make delicious Limoncellos, liquors, candied peels and to aromatize fish and meat!

Juice can be squeezed to make sweet teas, sauces, and also simply to be drank with water in the morning!

- Ornamental: It's a nice ornamental variety for its shape, and its beautiful white and fragrant flower!

COLD RESISTENCE

According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -6°C.

This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
