Επίσης η ποικιλία Nagami δίνει φρούτα οβάλ σχήματος με γλυκόξυνη γεύση, που εκτός από το ότι τρώγονται μπορούν να γίνουν και λικέρ.

Imported from Spain since it is not available in Cypriot nurseries. Gorgeous Nagami kumquat small tree, grafted onto Sour Orange rootstock allowing it to grow to a large size if planted in the ground and better survive in calcareous, hard and non-fertile soils. Also, the Nagami variety gives oval-shaped fruits with a sweet and sour taste, which, in addition to being eaten, can also be made into a liqueur.

The plant is 120cm tall, including pot. It is a high quality and productive kumquat variety and rare to find especially grafted on vigorous Sour Orange rootstock which will induce it to grow much larger than its standard small tree size.

Originally from southern China, this one of the oldest citrus plants, and was brought to Europe in the 19th century.

It is a small growing evergreen fruiting tree and highly productive, with bushy, compact foliage. The branches have very few thorns and the lanceolate leaves have a lovely rich green upper surface. It mainly flowers in summer and the flowers/blooms are petite, white and fragrant. The fruits are small and oval with smooth, brilliant deep orange colour, highly aromatic skin and pleasant, sourish flesh.

The plant is highly tolerant to cold and adapts well to being grown in pots as an ornamental plant. The teardrop fruits hold for long periods of time on the tree adding a wonderful decorative display to the garden. It can be eaten whole or used to make marmalade.

Fertilise Kumquat Nagami throughout the peak growing seasons. Low water requirements through winter, however, keep the tree well-watered throughout Summer. All Citrus will take up to 3 years to produce a harvestable crop. It isn’t uncommon in the first 12-18 months for the fruit to form on the tree but be undersize or lacking flavour. In the first 12 months the tree will be establishing its roots into the soil, the second year you should be establishing the framework of the tree and then in the third year, they should begin to crop. Uneven weather conditions can also affect the fruiting times, crops and yield.

Rootstock for Increased Vigor - Sour Orange (Citrus aurantium)

Sour Orange rootstock produces the best tasting citrus trees of almost any variety. Sour orange is of medium vigor and high productivity and it is used to increase the vigor of citrus scions leading to healthy, stronger and larger trees.

Sour Orange gives the best quality, flavor and texture to fruits of the grafted budstock. Varieties budded on sour orange stock produce high yields of good quality.

Sour Orange is an excellent rootstock and generally well adapted to different soils, with cotton root rot and Phytophthora tolerance, gummosis resistance and gives excellent cold hardiness. It was traditionally used to provide tolerance to salinity, iron deficiency associated with alkaline soils and less than optimal drainage.

Sour Orange is also the best rootstock for the lower desert as it is quite adaptable to the highly alkaline desert soil.

DESCRIPTION

Oval Kumquat or Nagami (Fortunella margarita) is the classic Chinese mandarin we all know!

This species is the Naga or Nagami kinkan of japan.

ORIGIN

We still don't know its origin at the moment.

It probably comes from China or japan, and it's highly grown in Asia.

PLANT

-Tree features: Plant is very spherical in shape, and usually thornless.

-Leaves: Leaves are lanceolate, bright green in colour, medium-small in size and long in shape.

FRUIT

-Shape: Fruit is the classic Kumquat: slightly oval, small in size.

-Flavour: You can actually eat the whole fruit, is so sweet and delicious! It is also seedy.

-Colour: Orange to deep orange outside, light orange inside.

SEASON OF RIPENESS

Season of ripeness: Oval Kumquat or Nagami starts to produce fruits from November to Spring.

It usually starts to bloom from may to September, following a cyclical flowering.

Flowers are white and extremely fragrant.

HOW TO USE IT

-In the Kitchen: Fruit is amazing in cooking recipes.

You can eat it whole, or use it to be candied, to make delicious marmalades, amazing cakes and sauces.

-Ornamental: it's also a nice ornamental choice for its compactness and its colour.

COLD RESISTENCE

According to our tests, in the Greenhouse, or in a covered area, it can resist to a temperature of -8°C.

This variety needs to be maintained like a normal Lemon.
